Japanese rose

Japanese rose can be recognised by its wrinkled leaves, spines of different sizes, large pink or white flowers and the typical red hips. The species from East Asia is planted a lot, so that you often find them directly in the residential area, but also in many dune areas. It is the most common exotic plant along the Flemish coast and behaves very invasive in the dunes. Japanese rose is displacing a lot of nature, such as dune grasslands, embryonic dunes, marram grasslands, ... In order to remove this species, it is necessary to dig down to a depth of up to one metre, after which the sand and all root parts are sieved. Every remaining root remnant can grow into a new plant.
