Red flowering currant

The red flowering currant originates from the western coast of North America. This shrub is a recent newcomer to Flanders and is currently found mainly in the dunes. Because of its strikingly coloured blood-red inflorescences, the species has been cultivated in Europe for a long time, after which it could escape and become naturalised. Red flowering currant is probably mainly spread by berry-eating birds. The shrub is related to other berry bushes such as the well-known red currant, which have much tastier berries.
