Northern dune tiger beetle

The Northern dune tiger beetle can measure up to two centimetres and can be recognised by its black-brown wing-cases with lighter transverse bands. Both adult and larvae are real predators and are equipped with large jaws. The beetle explores the ground walking and flying and grabs everything it can handle, especially ants and other insects. The larva waits in a hole in the ground for passing prey. The Northern dune tiger beetle is found on bare or sparsely vegetated sandy soil. At the Flemish coast, it is therefore mainly found in drifting dunes or other sandy places such as footpaths. Can you spot it on your next walk through the dunes?
