Round leaved wintergreen

Round leaved wintergreen is a rather rare species, which is still in decline. Underground, the plant has a system of shoots from which new stems emerge every year. At the base of the stalk, as its name suggests, a number of round leaves develop and survive the whole winter. At the top of this stem a flower cluster develops. The flowers, with a long and characteristic S-shaped style, hang down in an inverted position during flowering. In the dunes, round leaved wintergreen is found in humid dune slacks and in humid dunes with creeping willow.
