Queen of Spain fritillary
The Queen of Spain fritillary is a fairly rare species, mainly found on the coast. The top of the wings is, like those of most fritillaries:, orange with black dots. The underside of the hindwing has notable, large oval silver spots. The Queen of Spain fritillary is found along our coast on nutrient-poor dune grasslands where violets, its host plants (*), are found.
(*) A host plant is a plant from which an animal or other plant obtains its nutrients. Without the host plant, the animal or plant often cannot survive.
