Natterjack toad

The natterjack toad has a thin yellow stripe on its back and remarkably short legs, which makes it not such a good swimmer, but a very good runner. During the mating season, the males produce a rattling call to attract a female. The menu of natterjack toads includes flies, ants, beetles, bugs and spiders. The natterjack toad prefers heathland and dunes as habitat and in Flanders it is mainly found in the region ‘Kempen’ and along the coast. The natterjack toad is an absolute pioneer and only lives in open, sunlit areas. The animals reproduce in shallow, quickly warming waters. The natterjack toad is endangered throughout Europe and is protected under the European Habitats Directive.
